Get out and revel in the autumn air with a Berkshires tradition: the 46th annual Mount Greylock Ramble! Starting 8am, Columbus’ Day, in Adams, MA, thousands of hikers will make the ascent up the Cheshire Harbor Trail to the summit of the state’s highest mountain for an incredible view of the region’s seasonal colors!
Now is also a fabulous time to bike the Berkshires: take an unforgettable Fall ride on the Great Barrington Short Loop. Starting just north of Great Barrington on Route 7, the loop takes you up Monument Mountain, down Monument Valley Road to Route 23, past the Butternut Basin ski area, then back into Great Barrington. 11.1 miles of incredible scenery!
If a hike or a bike isn’t for you, don’t despair: a road trip can also provide an unforgettable fall foliage experience. Try traveling north along Route 7 from Sheffield to Williamstown or along Route 2 through the scenic Mohawk Trail to view the remarkable hues of nature’s paintbrush.
You never know where scenic drive along a backcountry road may lead you but, during a Berkshires’ autumn, you’re likely to find yourself at a farm where you can do some harvesting of your own! Apples and pumpkins are ready for the collecting all over the Berkshires by now and numerous farms and orchards, such as Ioka Valley Farm in Hancock, Mohawk Orchards in Shelburne, and Windy Hill Farms in Great Barrington, welcome visitors.
During the fall season, harvest festivals and fairs blossom aplenty. Sample apple cider at the Lenox Apple Squeeze & Harvest Festival on September 29th in Lenox. Soak up the homespun charm of the Hancock Shaker Village Country Fair in Pittsfield, September 28-29. The Eastern States Exposition – also known as “The Big E,” September 13th-29th – is still rolling and don’t miss the Berkshires’ longest running event: the 79th Annual Harvest Festival at the Berkshire Botanical Garden with food, rides, and games.
