the Berkshires stage

No matter your interests, there’s something on a Berkshires stage for you.

It should comes as no surprise to you that the Berkshires are awash with stage productions, acting studios, and live theater venues. Whatever your favorite entertainment – song dance, drama, comedy – a Berkshires stage is bound to be putting on something you’ll love. With the numerous theater companies, stage troupes, and well-established festivals found here, the Berkshires’ really do have it all.

Why the area is so attractive to the artistically inclined is debatable but we’re not complaining! Our reputation for theater grew out of three long-time mainstays: The Berkshire Theatre Festival, Tanglewood, and Jacob’s Pillow.

The Berkshire Theatre Festival was founded in 1928 and served as the impetus for others in the area. Originally known as the The Berkshire Playhouse, it has seen an amazing array of talented actors on its stage over the years, including James Cagney, Katherine Hepburn, Gene Hackman, Al Pacino, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and countless others

Boston Symphony Orchestra on the Berkshires StageTanglewood is home to two music schools, the Tanglewood Music Center and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. It also hosts the Festival of Contemporary Music, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, and the concerts of popular artists, bringing in musicians and conductors from all over the world every season. Tanglewood has been the summer home for Boston Symphony for 76 years.

The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival was founded in 1933 and remains the longest running dance festival in the US. Bringing together artists from more than 50 companies around the world, the festival includes performances, talks, screenings, classes, tours, and exhibits. See more on this famed festival here.

And that’s just the beginning. There are many offshoots of these three, grand institutions of the stage as well as innumerable other, independent companies, festivals, and theaters. Below is just a list of the many great venues to be found in the area:
