The Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio in Lenox, MA is the historic home of two American abstract artists: George L.K. Morris and Suzy Frelinghuysen.
Suzy Frelinghuysen and George L.K. Morris played a large role in the rise of abstract art in America. This remarkable couple created a Berkshire home that reflected their aesthetics. Now you can tour that home, preserved as it was when they lived in it!
The Frelinghuysen Morris House is a Bauhaus-inspired, Modernist structure of white planes and glass blocks that stands out from its Gilded Age neighbors.
The studio was built in 1930 by Morris and his friend George Sanderson. It is the earliest example of Modern architecture in New England. The house was added in 1941, designed by John Butler Swann. Both the house and the studio are in the National Register of Historic Places and are fascinating.
The Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio displays furnishings and decorations unchanged since the couple’s lifetime. The house and studio embody the artistic and stylistic innovations of Modernism. Marble sourced locally from Lee was used in the foyer of the house and the livingroom features an Argentinean leather floor.
The art collection includes a number of frescoes and paintings by Morris and Frelinghuysen. There are also works by Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, and Henri Matisse. The furniture is no less interesting, with pieces by many Modern masters, including Frankl, Deskey, and Aalto.
George L.K. Morris was fatally injured in an automobile accident in 1975 and Suzy Frelinghuysen passed away in 1988. Before she died, Suzy left instructions that the house, studio, and art collection be used for educational purposes. The Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio opened as a public museum in 1998 and has become a Berkshires magnet for devotees of Modern art and design. It is a must-see for fans of mid-century modern design.
