Naumkeag is a quintessential country estate of the Gilded Age, located in Stockbridge, MA. This National Historic Landmark is both an architectural and landscaping masterpiece worthy of your visit!

Naumkeag served as a 44-room summer home for the Choate family. A Gilded Age “cottage” built between 1885 and 1886, it is one of the only remaining, intact historic house museums in Massachusetts. Naumkeag is the name of the Native American peoples who originally lived in the area around Salem, Massachusetts.

Naumkeag commands a panoramic view and its shingle-style and traditional European elements make it a stunning marvel. Brick and stone towers, two-tone brick patterns, and wrought iron merge with a variety of hardwood paneling, ornate plaster and flooring, and a stunning three-story hand-carved oak staircase. The Choate family filled the home with original, late 19th century furnishings, arts, and antiques collected from around the world.

Beyond the house, the grounds include a tennis court, a linden walk, an orchard, and, of course, the world-renowned gardens.

After inheriting the estate in 1929, however, Mabel Choate and acclaimed landscape architect Fletcher Steele spent 30 years transforming the grounds into the stunning gardens you see today. The Afternoon Garden, the Blue Steps, the Tree Peony Terrace, and the Chinese Garden will amaze and delight you.

Naumkeag was bequeathed in its entirety to the Trustees of Reservations by Mabel Choate’s will in 1958. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and the entire estate was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007.

You can take tour Naumkeag’s house and gardens. Both guided and self-guided tours are available. Naumkeag is open on weekends from April 2nd to Memorial Day, 10am to 5pm. After Memorial Day to October 10th, Naumkeag is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Allow yourself a minimum of 1 hour if you’re just touring the gardens, 2 hours if you also plan to tour the house.
