The Berkshires is known as an artful place – whether it’s the Tanglewood Music Festival, charming art galleries in town or performances, we have a rich cultural tradition here.
Two local theater companies have new productions out right now. So take a getaway from the city to the Berkshires for a weekend of impressive performances!
10×10 New Play Festival at Barrington Stage Company
Running through March 3rd at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center. 36 Linden Street, Pittsfield MA.
Thurs-Fri-Sat at 7:30 p.m.; Sat-Sun at 3 p.m.
$20 Thursday evenings and Sat-Sun matinees; $25 Friday and Saturday evenings
Head to Pittsfield, about 20 minutes north of our Berkshire Inn, to the St. Germain Stage for an evening of ten 10-minute plays by 10 different playwrights, featuring seven talented actors as part of the 2013 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival. Fortunately for you, the show is running for an extended three week period!
The Lair by Shakespeare & Company in Lenox

The Liar by Shakespeare & Company in Lenox MA.
Running through March 24th at the Elayne P. Bernstein Theater. 70 Kemble Street, Lenox MA.
Fri-Sat at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
$22-$42 for Friday and Saturdays; $15-$25 for Sunday matinees
A tangled web of lies, misdirected advances and the unmistakable confusion of love, The Liar has all of the ingredients that make for a great French farce.
The truth will set most people free, but for Dorante, the disingenuous hero, a sequence of fibs may pave a convoluted road to happiness. A hilarious farce about mistaken identity, The Liar was originally penned by the classic 17th-century French playwright Pierre Corneille, in 1664. This adaptation by award-winning American playwright David Ives merges the iambic humor of classic verse with a contemporary twist.
Let Us Be Your Berkshires Lodging!
Whatever brings you to the Berkshires, theater or Tanglewood, Skiing or sketching, we would love to host you in our elegant and spacious inn, located in Lee, MA.

Are you a fan of Downton Abbey? Does the phrase “Call me Ishmael” have a special meaning for you? If you said “yes” to either of these statements, we have some upcoming Berkshire events that might peak your interest.
Herman Melville’s home, named Arrowhead, is the site where Moby Dick was written. The home will be open during the holiday season on weekends through January 13 for public tours. Hours are 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with tours on the hour at 11,12,1 and 2. The shop is open with gifts for all the history and literature buffs in your life.
Also recently opened is The Melville Trail. The intent of the Trail is to deepen the public’s understanding of Herman Melville’s connection to and love of many places in Berkshire County. Four of his most beloved locales now have permanent interpretive panels. Find them at Arrowhead, Pontoosuc Lake, Berkshire Athenaeum and Monument Mountain.

Arrowhead – the home of Herman Melville in Pittsfield MA
Also included on the trail are eight more places that Melville loved. Park Square, Hancock Shaker Village, Crane Museum of Paper Making, Balance Rock, Lenox Court House, Tanglewood/Hawthorne Cottage, October Mountain and of course Mount Greylock.
Although Melville’s work belongs to the world, it was the Berkshires that inspired him.
Ventfort Hall Mansion
On Saturday January 12 at 3 p.m. the Gilded Age Museum at Ventfort Hall presents a Tea and Talk. “Lords, Ladies & Mummies: The Story of Highclere Castle, the Real Downton Abbey” will be the subject with Curt DiCamillo as the speaker. DiCamillo is an architectural historian and a recognized authority on the British country house. The lecture coincides with the third season of the highly popular fictional television series Downton Abbey returning to American television. A snow date has been scheduled for Saturday, January 19, at 3:00 pm. A Victorian High Tea will follow the program.
Looking for a Massachusetts Getaway? We hope you will consider staying at our romantic Berkshire bed and breakfast – we would love to be your hosts!

Red Chair has arrived in the Berkshires!
What, you may be asking, is the ‘Red Chair?’ Well, here is a description from the Red Chair Travels website that will clarify:
“The Red Chair is a symbol, a movement, a phenomenon, a happening. Not just a simple wooden chair, this bright red vintage object is moving from place to beautiful place, exploring the best of New England all this year.
Move aside Flat Stanley, lie down garden gnome, hang yourself out to dry traveling pants… the Red Chair has arrived and captured the hearts and minds of America. This humble desk accoutrement, crimson paint peeling and wooden legs wobbling, will journey around New England building connections, meeting innkeepers and generally exploring some of the most beautiful corners of our country.”

Myself and Len with the Red Chair at our Inn
Sounds fun, right? The Red Chair’s visit to our Berkshires bed and breakfast was a great way for us to share with travelers all that the Berkshires has to offer as well as our thriving little community of Lee. Here are the places we brought the Red Chair:

In addition to balmy days and lush gardens, summer in the Berkshires brings the return of some of our favorite cultural events of the year. Berkshire-area festivals offer the unique opportunity not only to enjoy fantastic performances, but also to learn from these nationally and internationally famous actors, dancers and musicians. Aspiring artists of all disciplines can visit the Berkshires to hone their own crafts and be inspired by the very best.
Tanglewood 2012
This summer is a very special one for Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). 2012 marks the 75th anniversary of Tanglewood and the world-renown concert series is pulling out all the stops. The season officially opens on July 6, 2012 and will continue all summer with a wonderful variety of musical performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, famous guest conductors and musicians. The highlight event will be on July 14th: The Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Gala. For tickets, scheduling and additional information, visit BSO.org.
Jacob’s Pillow 2012
One of our favorite Berkshire summer events is already underway. This summer is the 80th Anniversary of the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival. In July, you won’t want to miss Vertigo Dance Company from Israel (July 4-8) and the return of Tero Saarinen’s very popular, Shaker-inspired Borrowed Light. The Hong Kong ballet will debut at Jacob’s Pillow July 18-22, 2012. These are just a few of the great dance performances offered in July. For a full schedule, tickets and more information, visit jacobspillow.org.
Professional Theater and Performances
Live performances and summer theater in the Berkshires are also heating up. The five theaters of the Berkshire Theater Group have a great summer season of premier live entertainment, from Hip Hop to cabaret. Coming up on Father’s day weekend, the second annual Berkshire British Motorcar Festival will be held in once again in downtown Lenox! First presented as the Tanglewood British Motorcar Festival and held on the same weekend last year, and with nearly 350 British Motorcars in attendance, the event was a big success!
This year the event will be based on the property of Shakespeare & Company, conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Lenox. Friday afternoon will kick off with the Fun Rally, the Registrant’s Reception at the Gateways Inn, and the evening Street Party showing off the participating British Motorcars parked on the diagonal downtown, with live band and street vendors providing food and entertainment.
Friday through Sunday, the British Car Corral and British Market Place & Auto Jumble will be held. The British Car Coral is a special location on the show grounds to sell or buy British Cars. The British Market Place & Auto Jumble is a collection of British Companies and vendors selling British or British like products and services. Hard-to-find motorcar spares, motoring accessories, picnicking accessories, motoring regalia, restoration service providers, fashion items, and more.
Saturday the judged competition “Concours d’Elegance” will be held, cars will be judge based on criteria including mechanical operation, paint, interior, woodworking, undercarriage, chrome, engine compartment, and authenticity, and of course must be British, over 15 years old, and may not be replicas.
Sunday a second driving tour takes off in the morning, exploring the scenic back roads of the Berkshires, and culminating back at Shakespeare & Company. The Tailgate Picnic Competition has become a “Classic” and perhaps one of the best Tailgate Competitions on the East Coast! A jolly good display of creativity, good food, and things British, awards will be given including: Most Elegant, Most Creative, Most British, Best Costume, Best Tasting, Most Humorous, and Most Shakespearean.
If you are celebrating Father’s Day in the Berkshires, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Applegate Inn is located just a ten minute drive from Main Street Lenox, visit our website or check our room availability, and contact us if you are looking for a last minute room!

Guests come to our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast during the summer to bask in the beauty of nature and enjoy outdoor recreation. They also come to immerse themselves in the extraordinary art and culture that’s found here.

Hike the Appalachian Trail this summer.
One day they can hike the Appalachian Trail. The next day they can visit world-renowned museums like The Clark and watch a performance by the Hong Kong Ballet. In between, they can dine in fabulous restaurants and lounge by the pool of our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast.

Glorious countryside overlooking The Clark Art Institute.
Each summer brings a plethora of festivals to the Berkshires. Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow Dance, the two most widely known festivals, draw audiences from all over the world. Other festivals, such as the Berkshires Art Festival, are smaller but also well regarded. Guests of our Berkshires Inn find there is plenty to do during the summer, and also plenty of space in which to do nothing.
The truth is, the Berkshire region of Massachusetts is a marvelous place for a summer vacation. Come see for yourself.

A simple dream: to stand on a snowy mountain.
People travel to our Bed and Breakfast in the Berkshires for all sorts of reasons. Some come here to be close to Tanglewood and the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Some come here to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Berkshires. And some come here to make a dream come true.
We recently hosted a guest who was here for just that reason. This woman was fighting cancer, and the cancer was gaining the upper hand. Her dream was to stand on top of a snowy mountain and take in the view.
We contacted all the ski areas in the region, and they were all eager to help. In the end, it was Jiminy Peak that was best able to accommodate her. She rode to the top of the mountain on a chairlift, saw what she wanted to see, and then made the journey down. Somehow, the fact that Jiminy Peak produces much of its energy from a wind turbine made the adventure that much better.
We can’t guarantee that all of your dreams will come true when you stay at our Berkshires inn. We can, however, help you realize some of them. Do you dream of finding a bottle of wine or champagne in your room upon arrival? It can happen. Do you dream of having a Swedish massage during your stay? All you need to do is ask.
Sometimes it can mean a lot to have people in your corner when you travel. Consider us those people in the Berkshires.

Guests of our Berkshires Inn never lack for something to do.

Edith Wharton's Estate, The Mount.
The region has superlative outdoor recreation, from hiking to skiing, paddling to zip-lining. It has some of the finest cultural offerings in the country: Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. It has world-class museums and historical sites: The Clark Art Institute, the Norman Rockwell Museum, Edith Wharton’s The Mount, and Melville’s Arrowhead.
Many guests of our Berkshires B&B live in a city, either New York City, Boston, or Hartford. They come to the Berkshires to stretch out and breathe in the fresh air. Some are avid outdoorsmen, and want to spend all of their time exploring the mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Berkshires. Others are drawn to the quintessential New England small towns that surround our inn. Still other guests come to enjoy the many cultural offerings the region has to offer.
No matter what you do by day, consider stepping out in the evenings.
Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield offers a wide array of entertainment. Recent events include the great Elvis Birthday Bash, which featured both a young Elvis and Elvis from the ’70s. Upcoming events include Jamie Kent & The Options on February 2, T Bone Daddy, a rocking’ blues trio on the 9th, and The Duke’s Men of Yale: A Night of Love and Heartbreak with Da Doox! on February 11.
Of course, quiet evenings spent at our luxurious Berkshires Bed and Breakfast also hold great appeal.

The Massachusetts Berkshires is truly a unique environment. The setting is pastoral, with rolling farmland, mature forests, and some of the oldest mountains in the country. The Appalachian Trail passes close to our Berkshires Lodging – evidence of the remarkable opportunities for outdoor recreation that exist in the region. Yet unlike many areas where nature looms large and beautiful, culture thrives here as well.

Blake Barn, at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.
Internationally renowned dancers and musicians travel to the region to perform in several different venues. Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, also showcases such artists as the Mark O’Connor String Quartet and master story-teller Garrison Keillor. MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) sponsors Bartleby’s Pen, a Friday night series of lively discussions lead by prominent literary figures, and The Clark Art Institute periodically screens Broadway performances.
One of the most thrilling opportunities for both residents and travelers to our Berkshires Inn is Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, which takes place each summer. Many of the artists featured at Jacob’s Pillow make only a handful of appearances in the United States, and most of those performances take place in large metropolitan areas. Yet they travel to the Massachusetts Berkshires to participate in Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, which The New York Times has called “the dance center of the nation and possibly the world.”
Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2011 runs June 18 through August 28. During the course of the festival, there will be performances by more than 50 dance companies and more than 200 free performances, talks, and special events. Spectators will be treated to:
- the U.S. debut of 3e Etage: Soloists and Dancers of the Paris Opera.
- a 30th anniversary performance by the Mark Morris Dance Group
- the U.S. premiere of Supernatural Wife by Big Dance Theater
- Argentinean tango by dancers and musicians of Tangueros del Sol
The list goes on and on, for Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival is all about bringing world-class dance performances to viewers.
Check out the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2011 calendar, and then book a room at our Bed and Breakfast in the Massachusetts Berkshires. We’re located less than 10 miles from world class dance.

Tanglewood hosts a multitude of incredible acts each season. During the summer of 2011, audiences will be enraptured by the musings of Garrison Keilor and A Prairie Home Companion, delighted by the melodic voice of James Taylor, and thrilled by the enthusiastic and creative dance of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Yet Tanglewood was born as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and BSO’s opening night at Tanglewood remains one of the most highly anticipated events of the season.

Charles Dutoit will conduct the BSO for Opening Night at Tanglewood, July 8, 2011.
July 8, 2011, is Opening Night at Tanglewood. Charles Dutoit will conduct as the Boston Symphony Orchestra plays excerpts from Act 1 of Norma (Bellini), the Overture to William Tell (Rossini), the Trio from Act 3 of I Lombardi (Verdi), and Pines of Rome, Symphonic Poem (Respighi). Accompanying the BSO will be Angela Meade – soprano, Kristine Jepson – mezzo-soprano, Roberto De Biasio – tenor, and James Morris – bass.
The BSO is pleased to announce that Charles Dutoit will be conducting; James Levine must regretfully cancel all 2011 Tanglewood performances on the advice of his doctors. Mr. Dutoit is the Chief conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, artistic director and principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic, and music director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra. He has conducted or collaborated with the world’s leading orchestras and all the major orchestra’s of the United States. His recordings have earned more than 40 awards and distinctions.
We still have some availability at our Berkshires Lodging for Tanglewood Opening Night, the weekend of July 8, 2001. Our Lenox MA Inn is close to Tanglewood, and we share our secret back route to Tanglewood with all of our guests.
Additional information and tickets are available at Tanglewood.

Consult your calendars and then consult the calendar of our Massachusetts bed and breakfast. Dream of leaves crunching underfoot while you walk through forests dressed in red, orange, yellow and gold.

Even more important, it is a fun course to play.
