Rembrandt and Degas at The Clark

October 10th, 2011 by Applegate Inn

Rembrandt: Self-Portrait in Fur Hat

Rembrandt: Self-Portrait in a Fur Hat.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn lived from 1606 to 1669. He was drawn to art at a young age and quickly mastered all he was taught. By the time he was 22 years of age, he had developed a reputation as an excellent artist. Students flocked to him from that point on.

Edgar Degas lived from 1834 to 1917. He left school at a young age in order to study art. Degas spent years copying the works of Renaissance Masters, and had drawn and painted over 700 such copies by the time he was 13. Rembrandt, who made self-portraits throughout his life, was one of the masters studied closely by Degas.

Guests of our Bed and Breakfast in the Berkshires will soon have the opportunity to see many of the early works of Rembrandt and Degas at The Clark Art Institute.  Rembrandt and Degas: Two Young Artists opens November 13, 2011. The exhibit runs through February 5, 2012, when it moves to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The Clark is the first United States stop of the tour of Rembrandt and Degas: Two Young Artists. The exhibit comes to the Massachusetts Berkshires directly from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it originated. It is a collaboration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Clark Art Institute, and the Rijksmuseum.

If you can’t make it to our Lenox Bed and Breakfast this October to see magnificent fall foliage, head here this winter to see magnificent art.

More information about the exhibit may be found at The Clark.

Reflections on Melville

September 7th, 2011 by Applegate Inn

Greylock

What does Mount Greylock inspire in you?

Herman Melville had deep ties to the land and deep ties to the sea. He loved the Berkshire Hills, where his uncle had a farm and where he spent many summers during his youth. Yet at the age of 22, Melville did not head to the Berkshires. Instead, he went to sea. Melville shipped out of Massachusetts on board the Acushnet, a whaler bound for the Pacific; he spent three years working his way through the islands, often on his own. The experience had a profound impact on his life and his writing.

Reflections on Melville is an exhibit at Arrowhead, Herman Melville’s home in the Massachusetts Berkshires.

Attend a Concert at Tannery Pond while staying at our Lee MA Bed and Breakfast.

Concerts at Tannery Pond run from the end of May to mid September. Only 2 performances remain in 2011:

Berkshire Jewish Film Festival 2011

August 1st, 2011 by Applegate Inn

The 25th annual Berkshire Jewish Film Festival is currently underway in Lenox, just minutes away from our luxury Berkshires Bed and Breakfast. Both cinephiles and people interested in the Jewish culture and religion should take note.

The Berkshire Jewish Film Festival runs Mondays July 11 through August 22, 2011. Read on for a list of remaining films:

  • Brothers examines the debate of separation of state and religion through the relationship of two brothers, a secular kibbutz Israeli and an orthodox Torah scholar living in the U.S. August 1 at 4 p.m.
  • Barney’s Version is based on Mordecai Richler’s comic novel of the same name. It follows Barney Panofsky – politically incorrect, irascible, impulsive, and blunt. Starring Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver. August 1 at 8 p.m.
  • Mahler on the Couch and Making Music is a behind the scenes look at Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Swedish Radio Symphonic Orchestra. August 8 at 4 p.m.

  • Anita follows a young woman with Down Syndrome lost in Buenos Aires after the 1994 attack on the Jewish Community Center. August 15, 8 p.m.
  • Women Unchained documents the struggles of several women to obtain a “get” or Jewish divorce, and move on with their lives. “According to traditional Jewish law, a woman who is an “augur” (from the Hebrew word meaning “chained”) cannot remarry.” August 22 at 4 p.m.

Following Women Unchained, there will a closing reception and a concert by Joshua Nelson and his Kosher Gospel.

All screenings take place at the Duffin Theater at the Lenox Memorial High School, 197 East Street, Lenox. It is approximately five miles from our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast. Seating is general admission.

Extend your weekend getaway into a long weekend. Stay at our Lenox Bed and Breakfast some Monday night this August, and see a wonderful film or two at the Berkshire Jewish Film Festival. You’ll have that much longer to experience the natural beauty and cultural offerings of the Massachusetts Berkshires.

Fall Golfing Packages

September 21st, 2009 by Applegate Inn

Most folks know how lovely New England is in the fall. If you have never been here at the height of fall foliage, you will be astounded by the sheer numbers of colorful deciduous trees. As one guest from the northwest uttered in awe while gazing over the colorful Berkshires, “I had no idea… I didn’t realize it was like this.” Certainly this is a good time to stay at our western Massachusetts bed and breakfast.

Bring your golf clubs the next time you stay at our Berkshires inn.

Bring your golf clubs the next time you stay at our Berkshires inn.

There are lots of ways to enjoy autumn in New England, from walks in the woods to scenic drives. For golfers, this is perhaps the best time of year to throw your clubs in the car and visit golf courses throughout New England. Crisp autumn weather is perfect for golfing: not too hot, not too cold. And nothing is quite so enjoyable as a drink in front of the fire on a cool autumn evening after you have spent the day out in the fresh air, walking from hole to hole.

We are lucky to be in such close proximity to fantastic golf. Indeed, Greenock Country Club is just across the street from our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast, and Egremont Country Club and Pontusooc Golf Club are quite close as well. Take advantage of our Fall Golfing Package and get a free round of golf at one of these locations when you stay two nights with us.

Hiking in the Berkshires

July 10th, 2009 by Applegate Inn

Room 5, Main House, Applegate Inn

Relax in our Massachusetts bed and breakfast after your berkshires hike

Take a break from the cultural richness of the Berkshires and head out into the wilderness for a hike. Nothing calms the mind like being surrounded by trees and magnificent rock formations. You will feel refreshed and ready either to head back to Tanglewood or go straight to your Berkshires bed and breakfast for a dip in the pool and a sit on the porch.

The trail to Ice Glen is less than 1.5 miles there and back, without much gain in elevation. Heavily shaded by huge, old hemlock trees, the trail offers one pleasant surprise after another. Deep caves, stacked boulders, and narrow fissures abound, along with dramatic views of the ravine. This trail has been popular for many years; indeed, Nathaniel Hawthorne called Ice Glen “the most curious fissure in all Berkshire.”

The Ice Glen trailhead is just south of Stockbridge, MA – a short drive from our Lee MA bed and breakfast. We will feed you a delicious breakfast and send you on your way. You should have plenty of time to return to your room and rest before heading out to one of the many delicious restaurants in the region, or to a concert at Tanglewood.

Tanglewood is Upon Us

July 1st, 2009 by Applegate Inn

The Official opening night of Tanglewood is July 3, although talented folks such as Garrison Keillor and the Prairie Home Companion, the Juilliard String Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet have already come and gone. Those of us who live and work at this Berkshires bed and breakfast are super excited for the new season; it always brings a surprisingly varied selection of skilled musicians, dancers, and artists of all kinds. We look forward to meeting the guests who come to our inn specifically for events at Tanglewood, and to hearing what they thought of performances we can’t make.

Those of you who plan on attending more than one performance during the 2009 Tanglewood season should consider purchasing a Tanglewood Lawn Pass Book. There are eleven tickets per book, which are valid for all Boston Symphony and Pops concerts in the Koussevitzky Music Shed and Ozawa Hall. Our Lee MA Bed and Breakfast is close enough to Tanglewood to make using your Lawn Pass a cinch – especially once we show you the secret route we use to get there. Enjoy all our amenities before and after the concert: relax by the pool or take a dip; fill yourself with an amazing, home cooked breakfast in the morning, and enjoy a glass or wine in the parlor in the evening.

Weekends fill up at Tanglewood. Consider staying at our Tanglewood lodging during the week, when the crowds are a bit thinner. The music is delightful any day of the week.

Hailed as “one of the most important violinists of his generation” (Tanglewood website), Christian Tetzlaff will delight music aficionados with several performances at Tanglewood. Hear him play Stravinsky and Brahms on July 5, and Beethoven’s complete sonatas for violin and violin July 6, 7 and 9, when he is joined by Alexander Lonquich on the piano.

July 14 and 15, Le Concert des Nations offers listeners the chance to hear Jacobean Masque and Stage Music, Locke’s music for The Tempest and Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, as well as Lully’s Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The two performances are both directed by Jordi Savall, but each one is unique and engaging in its own right.

We are thrilled that the 2009 Tanglewood season is at last upon us, and hope to see you here soon.

Visit The Clark Art Institute

June 21st, 2009 by Applegate Inn

One of the most reputable and unique art museums in the world is near our Berkshires bed and breakfast. The Clark Art Institute is both a first class art museum and a highly acclaimed research museum with a mission to “advancing and extending the public understanding of art.” It is also located in a rural area, which is extremely rare for a museum of its kind.

The Clark is perhaps best known for its collection of French Impressionist paintings, which is extensive. In addition, world-renowned exhibits rotate through the museum. Now through October 18, visitors will have the opportunity to view “Through the Seasons: Japanese Art in Nature”. This exhibit features scrolls and screens from the seventeenth through 19th centuries, and contemporary ceramics: the works are linked by “emphasizing the inspirational role of nature in Japanese art” (Clark website). “Dove/O’Keeffe: Circles of Influence” runs through September 7, 2009; it explores the influence of Arthur Dove on O’Keeffe and her work. According to the Clark website, the artistic dialogue between O’Keeffe and Dove “yielded a form of modernism grounded in direct, emotional responses to nature, and their profound aesthetic connection helped shape the course of art in America.” Both of these exhibits are worth a trip to The Clark.

Located as it is in one of the most scenic areas of western Massachusetts, The Clark invites visitors to experience the outdoors through Geocaching. Bring your own GPS or borrow one free of charge from the museum and head into the wild. Geocaching is a game. Hikers use a GPS device to locate hidden containers (geocaches) full of treasures that were left behind by other geocachers. Leave your own treasure and then go in search of the next cache. It is a great way to get out into the fresh air, stretch your legs, and enjoy the beauty of the Berkshires.

Check out some of The Clark Art Institute specials that combine entry into the museum with tickets to Tanglewood. Our Massachusetts Bed and Breakfast is ideally situated to take advantage of both Tanglewood and The Clark, and we hope you do while you are staying here. When you feel the need to take a vacation from your vacation, simply pull up a chaise lounge and relax by the pool. Art, music, and relaxation – that is what summer is all about.

Hiking Near Our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast

Hike the Berkshires

We get quite a few avid hikers at our Berkshires bed and breakfast. Given our proximity to the Berkshires, that is no surprise.  We encourage all you trail walkers to check out our Hiker’s Special. After a healthy breakfast at Applegate Inn, we will give you a trail map, water bottles and snacks, and point you in the direction of the Pleasant Valley Mass. Audubon Wildlife Preserve. We’ll even pay for your entrance to the preserve. Please mention this special when you make your reservation.

We love spring at our Berkshire b&b. The flowers are in bloom, the days are warm and the nights are cool. Nearby trails throughout the Berkshires are sparsely populated, making it a good time to explore them. The Pleasant Valley Sanctuary is quite near our bed and breakfast Lenox; it is one of the best spots in the Berkshires to catch site of a beaver or for bird watching. The 1.6 mile trail is not too strenuous, but very rewarding. When you return to the inn, have a dip in our heated pool and relax.
