Marrowstone Vineyards joined Olympic Peninsula Wineries this January and we’re so very happy to have them with us!
Marrowstone Vineyards is located on Marrowstone Island, naturally enough, atop a hill overlooking Puget Sound. Sampling the vineyard’s wines while taking in the view from the winery’s deck is quite the experience: Whidbey Island setting there in the sparkling blue of the sound, the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains in the distance; sailboats and large cruise, Navy, or cargo ships passing; and the kind quiet you can only find when you’re well away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Breathtaking.
Ken and Judith Collins relocated from northern California to the Pacific Northwest in 2006 and found themselves with five acres and no real idea what they could to do with it. A Master Gardner’s class gave them the hint they were after, however, when they learned that, contrary to what they had previously been told, certain varieties of grapes do, in fact, do well here in the Puget Sound region.
Well, what do you know?
Marrowstone Vineyard’s wines use Washington and Oregon grape varieties, such as Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Reisling. Their wines are Our wines are fermented to a crisp and refreshing dryness that pairs well with seafood, cheeses, and chicken dishes. They also make a deslicious, spiced apple wine reminiscent of apple pie. Mmmmm!
Marrowstone Vineyards is more than just a winery, they also serve as a gallery for local artists. Sculpture, paintings, pottery, blown glass, and more decorate the walls of the tasting room and fill the upstairs gallery of the winery.
Marrowstone Vineyards is also available for weddings, reunions, and other events. We are happy to provide referrals for local caterers, musicians, photographers, wedding officiants and rental services for everything you may need for your event.
Imagine yourself on a lovely, secluded island, at the very tip of the Olympic Peninsula. It is summer and the sun is shining (really!). Before you, a vineyard heavy with ripening fruit stretches down a gentle slope towards the sparkling blue waters of Puget Sound. Across the Sound lies Whidbey Island, buttressed by the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains.
You are no doubt asking yourself, (looking at the adjacent photo), how or why did this middle-aged couple decide to plant a vineyard and create a winery? The short answer was provided a few years ago by one of our relatives back in Ohio, “You guys are crazy to do this!” The longer answer is that we decided about eight years ago to relocate from northern California to the Pacific Northwest and began looking for property in Seattle, the Olympic Peninsula and Whidbey Island. After many hours in the company of realtors, we found a property with a lovely view of Puget Sound, a house that “appeared” to need little work and a lovely horse barn, then occupied by actual horses. We moved to our new home on June 1st, 2006. Not knowing quite what to do with five acres of property, we both enrolled in a Master Gardener class and learned, contrary to what we had been told, that one could grow certain varieties of grapes in the Puget Sound region. We then visited a number of wineries in the Puget Sound area including several on Whidbey Island and Bainbridge Island, which were, in fact, making wine from estate-grown grapes.
Their Pinot Noir grapes come from the heart of the Willamette Valley and are aged in seasoned French oak barrels, to add structure and a subtle hint of oak, but allowing the natural fruit flavors to predominate.
We also make a spiced apple wine that will remind you of homemade apple pie.
The annual Tanglewood Jazz Festival will take place September 4 and 5, 2010, and will feature some of the best contemporary jazz artists in the world. We currently have openings at our Tanglewood lodging during the Jazz Festival, and invite all jazz enthusiasts to hop in the car and head to our bed and breakfast Lenox, Massachusetts for this big event.
