A Good Massage in the Berkshires

March 5th, 2012 by Applegate Inn

Before a good massage, our bodies are weighed down by our worries. Though we may not be aware of how we hold on tightly to expectations, disappointments, hopes, hold on tightly we do. Muscles are constantly flexed, connective tissue contracted. To a greater or lesser degree, we hurt.

Berkshire massages

Bliss out with a massage at Soul Spa during your stay at Applegate Inn.

During a good massage, the tightness is released. Muscles are worked,  connective tissue stretched; worries dissipate, expectations and hopes fade away. We cease to think at all. We are aware of our bodies: our muscles and tendons and bones and skin.

After a good massage, we feel no pain, no aches. We feel no bones, no muscles. We simply exist. It is an incredible feeling, to lie still and be, not feel. It’s what it must be like to be a pool of still water.

The Spa Indulgence Package at our Berkshire Inn can transform you from a tense body to a pool of still water. Leave the city and worries behind. Travel to the peaceful Berkshires and indulge in a Deep Tissue Massage or a Swedish Massage at Soul Spa. Guests of Applegate Inn receive a 10% discount.

Romantic Getaway in the Berkshires

January 28th, 2012 by Applegate Inn

There must be a reason St. Valentine’s Day falls in February*, a cold, snowy month in much of the northern Hemisphere. It must be because there is something inherently romantic about cold weather.

20 years of snow

Cold, snowy days inspire romance.

When it’s cold outside, we like to curl up by a fire. We like to sip warming drinks like cocoa or brandy. When it’s cold outside, we like to snuggle against someone warm. Cold outside = romance inside.

In short, February is ideal for romantic getaways at our Berkshires Bed and Breakfast.

All that cuddling and snuggling by the fire is even better after a day out in the cold. Plenty of opportunities to enjoy the winter weather exist near our Berkshires inn: downhill skiing and snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing; this winter, which has seen relatively little in the way of snowfall, hiking is an option.

Nearby Jiminy Peak has great skiing, and après ski entertainment to help transition to romance. Their John Harvard’s Restaurant and bar has live music every Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. To accompany the music, food and drink specials run from 3 to 5 p.m.

Nothing puts some people in a romantic mood more than a few hours of cross country skiing. For these folks, a trip to Canterbury Farm Ski Touring Center in Becket, or Hilltop Orchards in Lenox is an order.

For those who find romance in adventure, try the moonlit snowshoe trek at Hilltop Orchards. Weather permitting, the next two take place Saturday, February 4 and Saturday, March 10, 2012. Walk hand in hand through the snowy, New England woods. Find warmth and entertainment by a bonfire or inside by the fire, and enjoy wine tasting as well.

Back at our luxury Bed and Breakfast Berkshires, have a soak in a whirlpool tub or a relaxing steam in a steam shower. Sit together in front of  your own fireplace and let romance blossom.

Our Romance Package includes a sumptuous 3-course dinner for two, as well as chocolate and a split of champagne. Please see our Berkshires Inn Specials page for more details.

* In truth, St. Valentine’s Day dates back to the days of ancient Rome, a city not known for it’s extreme cold or snow. For the purposes of the this blog, we chose to overlook that fact.

Make Time for Romance

April 14th, 2010 by Applegate Inn

We’re running Romance Packages at our Lenox MA bed and breakfast for just a little while longer, through the end of May. A romantic getaway is great excuse to leave city living behind for a few days.  Our Lenox Bed and Breakfast is about 1 hour from Hartford, 2 hours from Boston, and 3 hours from New York City.

Spring is a lovely time in the Berkshires. The small towns start to come out of winter hibernation, throwing open their doors to the sunshine and warmth. Chilly nights make a great excuse to cuddle by the fire at our Lenox inn.

There are wonderful pigs at Hancock Shaker Village

Come for a farm and forest trail walk at Hancock Shaker Village, where you’ll see red trillium in bloom and meet many cute calves, chicks, piglets and lambs. Take in the Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris exhibit at The Clark, before it closes on April 25, 2010; be sure to explore The Clark’s walking trails and grounds, too. Check out Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle’s project Gravity Is a Force to be Reckoned With, at MASS MoCA.

Explore the Berkshires by day. Once back at our Lenox area B&B, you’ll be greeted by a pleasant, romantic atmosphere. Our Romance Package includes a room with a fireplace, a three-course dinner for two, champagne and chocolates. It’s a lovely way to celebrate the departure of winter, the arrival of spring, and your relationship.

Plan a Romantic Retreat in the Snowy Berkshires

January 18th, 2010 by Applegate Inn

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and now is the time to plan to sweep your sweetie off his or her feet with a stay in a romantic bed and breakfast Berkshires.

Under normal circumstances, a little getaway to our Lee MA b&b can be pretty darn romantic. A beautiful setting, lazy mornings and delicious breakfasts help set a certain tone. Roaring fires in the winter add a nice touch, as does the brandy you’ll find in your room at bedtime.

Share a quiet evening in front of the fire

If you are looking to create an ultra-romantic mood for Valentine’s Day, we offer two Romance Packages at our inn. You’re room will have its own fireplace, ready to be lit. We’ll feed you a three-course dinner for two, by candlelight. Your room will have a soaking tub and steam shower or a whirlpool large enough for two. We’ll bring a split of champagne and chocolate to your room, and we’ll leave you alone.

It is possible to add to this with our Ultimate Romance Package, which includes fresh flowers and a framed 8×10 photo of your time together here.

Of course, there is plenty to do in and around Lee MA should you decide to leave your room. Excellent restaurants, art galleries and shops await, as do miles of cross-country and downhill ski trails.

Sometimes it’s just nice to do something extra special for the person you love.

Add Great Theater to a Weekend Getaway in the Berkshires

September 14th, 2009 by Applegate Inn

Few things are quite as restorative as throwing an overnight bag in the car and heading off for a romantic getaway in the country. Surrounded by charming New England towns and the beautiful Berkshires, our western Massachusetts bed and breakfast is the ideal location for such a trip. In addition to a lovely, tranquil setting on six acres, elegant lodging and delicious food, you will find our Berkshires inn to be conveniently located to an extraordinary number of cultural attractions.

The Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield is one such place, not far north of our Lee MA lodging. Freud’s Last Session is running through October 4, 2009. Don’t miss this fascinating, imagined conversation between atheist Dr. Freud and devout Christian C.S. Lewis, as they discuss God, sex, and the meaning of life. Their exchange is thought provoking as well as deeply humorous. This play is followed by a favorite musical; The Fantasticks is “a captivating romantic comedy about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall.”

If you happen to be staying with us on the third Thursday of a month, you may enjoy a trip up to Pittsfield for 3rd Thursdays. From 5 – 8pm, the downtown area of Pittsfield is full of music, art and great food. Art Galleries and museums stay open late, and art and music take over the town. The next two 3rd Thursdays are September 17 and October 15. Why not check out our specials – you may find temptation to cancel everything and head to the Southern Berkshires in time for 3rd Thursday on September 17.
