20th Anniversary of Ozawa Hall is part of the 2014 Tanglewood Season

The 20th Anniversary of Ozawa Hall is just one part of the upcoming 2014 Tanglewood season

Winter is slowly waning to spring (no, really) and the 2014 Tanglewood season is fast approaching with both some familiar faces and a few new ones.

Tanglewood welcomes back numerous familiar conductors, soloists, and vocalists this year, such as James Taylor, Yo Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, and Joshua Bell.

Some of the new faces to the Tanglewood music festival are trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger, violinist Leonidis Kavakos, and Jason Alexander of “Seinfeld” fame who, beyond acting and comedy, also happens to be a singer.

Returning to the Tanglewood stage is Andris Nelsons, now as the newly appointed music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Nelsons is scheduled to conduct four performances with the BSO and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.

The 2014 Tanglewood season kicks off June 28 with Garrison Keiller’s “A Prairie Home Companion” along with the ever-popular “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” of public radio fame.

Josh Groban is scheduled to appear with the Boston Pops on August 30th and, of course, John Williams will lead the annual Tanglewood Film Night on August 2nd.

This year also marks the 20th year of Ozawa Hall, an anniversary that will be celebrated with two operas, two jazz concerts, stars like cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Jeremy Denk, and the National Youth Orchestra, and a marathon performance of Shostakovich’s final five quartets by the Emerson Quartet.

Another sure winner will be the Boston Pops accompanying the classic, 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” with a live performance of the score, as conducted by Keith Lockhart on August 22nd. This follows last season’s success with scoring and screening “West Side Story.”

Many, many more performances and stars are also scheduled for the season, along with a wide assortment of panels, talks, open rehearsals, and other programming.
