American Son is a compelling racial drama, starring Tamara Tunie and Michael Hayden. Written by Christopher Demos-Browne, and directed by Julianne Boyd, the play’s world premiere earlier this summer received rave reviews. The play has since received the prestigious Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play of 2016.
American Son’s ripped-from-the-headlines story centers on the Miami parents of a biracial teen who has been involved in an incident with the police. Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU) plays Mom, a psychology professor. Michael Hayden (Murder One) plays Dad, an FBI agent. Luke Smith and André Ware co-star.
A taut and compelling drama, American Son draws our nation’s racial divide into the light through the struggle of an estranged, interracial couple’s unexpected crisis. A tense, suspenseful, and emotionally powerful play, American Son will make you uncomfortable at times. It’s the kind of discomfort, however, that brings with it growth and understanding. It is a very timely exploration of race and culture in our country.
Julianne Boyd, founder and Artistic Director of the Barrington Stage Company, brings the production to life with a searing intensity that follows you home. Playwright Christopher Demos-Browne has received numerous awards and citations for his plays, including “Fear Up Harsh” and “When the Sun Shone Brighter.” Other works include “Captiva” and “Our Lady of Allapattah.”
