Becket Quarry and Forest PreserveExplore miles of beautiful, protected forest trails and the remains of abandoned, historic Becket quarry in Becket, MA. Just 30 minutes from our Berkshires bed and breakfast, Applegate Inn.

The Chester-Hudson Quarry was integral to the early development of Becket and the surrounding area. It extracted granite for gravestones and monuments from the 1850’s to the 1960’s.

The quarry was one of the largest in the area, which makes it doubly surprising that, in the end, it was simply abandoned. Not just the site but the equipment. Trucks, drills, derricks, buildings – all left behind to rot and rust. Almost as if the workers went for an afternoon stroll and just never came back.

Visiting Becket Land Trust

Becket Land Trust is 300+ acres of forest and quarry landscape. The area is alive with wildlife, beautiful vegetation, and one of the most intact, historic quarry landscapes in the state. People come from all around to explore the old quarry and hiking trails.

The preserve is about 16 miles east of our Lee MA inn on Route 20. Take Route 20 to Bonny Rigg Hill Road, to Quarry Road. On-site parking is plentiful. A kiosk at the access trailhead offers trail maps and other preserve  information.

One of the most popular walks is the Self-Guided Historic Quarry Tour. This will take you to all the key points of the historic quarry. The blacksmith shop, a standing derrick, the experimental air-drill testing tunnel, and more.abandoned machinery at Becket Quarry

Old vehicles, mining equipment, and the remains of buildings crumble slowly into the ground throughout the forest. Views at the quarry itself are stunning.

The water may look tempting but caution is urged. It contains rusting derricks, cables, and other hazards. Cliff diving here is very popular … and strictly forbidden.
