Tanglewood 2021 is on! Live, in-person performances are returning to the Tanglewood campus this summer, July 9 through August 16. The full schedule was announced April 8 and tickets will go on sale May 17.
Spring is here and things just keep getting brighter. The announcement of the Tanglewood Music Festival’s return, after last year’s pandemic cancellation, generated shock waves of surprise and delight that continue to reverberate.
Tanglewood Music Festival is one of the biggest – if not the biggest – festival in the Berkshires. Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). The beloved annual event is tradition, drawing thousands of music fans and performers from around the country and the world.
The convenient location of our Berkshires bed and breakfast, Applegate Inn, puts you less than 6 miles from Tanglewood’s campus in Lenox. We also partner with Tanglewood every year, so that we can provide an inside track for tickets to our guests, when possible. Tickets will be very limited this year and we still don’t know what will be available.
If there is a downside to the festival’s return, it is that this year’s Popular Artists Series has once again been postponed and/or cancelled. These shows, originally scheduled for summer 2020, then rescheduled for summer 2021 due to the pandemic, are currently off again.
It is possible some of the shows could reappear on the schedule later in the year. Who knows what the future will bring? We’ll keep an eye out for any major developments.
The 2021 Tanglewood season is only six weeks long this year and will be accompanied by weekly live video streams on BSO NOW.
This year will see a Saturday-evening and Sunday-afternoon BSO series and Monday-evening Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (TMCO) series. Friday evenings will feature recitals, guest artists and ensembles, and the Boston Pops. BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons will lead the BSO in six performances and the TMCO in two.
While the campus is opening back up for live performances, you can still expect the by now usual precautions of masks, social distancing, and so on. All performances will be at the open-air Koussevitzky Music Shed and will last up to 80 minutes, with no intermission.
As I say above, tickets for this year’s performances go on sale to the public May 17th. Visit bso.org to view the full schedule, then start making those summer Tanglewood plans.
If those plans include an overnight stay, consider lodging with Applegate Inn. Not only are we just 10 minutes away from the campus, we may also be able to help with tickets. Just let us know.
See you soon!
