The schedule for the 2016 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series just keeps getting more interesting, now with the addition of two – or, I should say three – big names: Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan with Mavis Staples!
Each year’s Tanglewood Popular Artists Series comes with lots of surprises and anticipation but this year seems especially laden with last minute reveals of big name, pop celebrities.
Recent press releases revealed the Bob Dylan with Mavis Staples show, scheduled for Saturday, July 2nd, and then another just now – Dolly Parton with the Boston Pops, opening the 2016 Tanglewood season on Friday, June 17th.
Singer-songwriter, poet, and painter Bob Dylan needs no introduction and has graced the Tanglewood stage twice before, in 1991 and 1994. Interestingly, Bob Dylan’s first visit to the Berkshires as an artist, some 52 years ago, was unannounced: appearing as a guest of Joan Baez at her Boy’s Club concert in Pittsfield in 1963.
His most recent appearance in the Berkshires was 2006, in Pittsfield. Who knows when or if he will grace us with his presence again – so don’t miss it!
Gospel and rhythm and blues singer, actress, and civil rights activist Mavis Staples got her start with her famous family, The Staples Singers. Later, she gained her own prominence and has made recordings with Prince, Ry Cooder, and Jeff Tweedy. Mavis’ hit singles include “Oh What a Feeling,” “The Voice,” and “Blood Is Thicker Than Time”
Dolly Parton’s debut on the Koussevitzky Music Shed stage is a high profile one, kicking off the 2016 Tanglewood season with the Boston Pops Orchestra and, one can only assume, her own, irrepressible style. An actress, accomplished singer-songwriter, and Country music icon, Dolly Parton has earned 25 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards for her artistry and is one of only five female artists to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award. Her hits include “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” “Love Is Like a Butterfly,” “9 to 5,” and “Jolene.”
