The announcement of the Tanglewood schedule is always an exciting and eagerly anticipated event. As the summer home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) the annual Tanglewood Music Festival brings classical music’s biggest names to the Berkshires stage every summer. This year is no exception, with a cornucopia of returning and first-time stars, premiers, and special events on the calendar.
2019 will see the opening of the Tanglewood Learning Institute and a full-performance of Wagner’s “Die Walküre.” 2019 will also feature the world premiere of “The Brightness of Light,” Kevin Puts’ piece based on letters between Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe.
2019 Tanglewood Schedule Highlights
The presentation of all 3 acts of Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” July 27th and 28th, is a first for Tanglewood. The opera will be performed in three sittings by the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Andris Nelsons conducting. All three acts will be presented as separate concerts. Act I is scheduled for July 27th; Acts II and III the 28th. Soloists include Christine Goerke as Brünnhilde, Simon O’Neill as Siegmund, and James Rutherford as Wotan.
July 20th will see the world premiere of Kevin Puts’s opera: “The Brightness of Light,” based on the correspondence between Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe. Featured soloists are Baritone Rod Gilfry and 2019’s Koussevitzky Artist, soprano Renée Fleming.
July 23rd will see Tanglewood On Parade. BSO conductors for the program include Andris Nelsons, Keith Lockhart, John Williams, Thomas Wilkins, and James Burton – wow!
