Berkshire Botanical Garden – Put a Little Spring In Your Step

March 6th, 2020 by Corey A. Edwards

Berkshire Botanical GardenWhat better way to welcome the arrival of spring than with a visit to Berkshire Botanical Garden? The annual Bulb Show is on right now – and the display gardens open soon – May 1st, 2020!

If you’ve never made a visit to Berkshire Botanical Garden (BBG), you’re truly missing out. Even non-gardeners are wowed by the stunning display. 24 acres of meticulously groomed display gardens, walking paths, manicured lawns, and 3 greenhouses.

BBG is located in Stockbridge, MA just over 6 miles from our Berkshires bed and breakfast, Applegate Inn. The Garden also has the distinction of being one of the oldest public display gardens in the Northeast, having opened in 1934.

BBG is designed as a “museum of living things,” with display areas that are meant to be as educational and functional as they are ornamental.
The Garden focus is primarily on native plants but also includes non-native species that thrive in the Berkshires climate.

Berkshire Botanical GardenDisplays include a historic herb garden with over 100 varieties of herbs, pond and rock gardens, and an arboretum containing native and exotic trees. Seasonal displays include fruit and vegetable beds, bulbs, annuals, grasses, vines, blooming shrubs and trees, perennials, and ground covers.

The Garden is also home to one of the finest topiary collections in North America. The recently donated collection includes 21 large, custom-designed topiaries in nine different vignettes. Fascinating!

Special Events and Opening Day

While the display gardens are only open May 1st through Columbus Day every year, the facility itself presents classes, lectures, workshops, and exhibits throughout the year.

One of the first big events of the year is on right now – The Bulb Show!

The annual Bulb Show is a showcase of both New England and South African flowering bulbs. Enjoy a display of narcissus, tulip, grape hyacinth, and other native bulbs as they bloom alongside a unique collection of South African bulbs. This free event is held in BBG’s Fitzpatrick Greenhouse – March 2nd to the 29th, 9am to 4pm, daily.

The Bulb Show is just the beginning of Berkshire Botanical Garden’s spring celebrations.
