Fans of the Bard (or just good theater) visiting the Berkshires should do what they can to catch a Shakespeare & Company production. The 2018 season is already in full swing and will be until December 16th!
The Berkshires are known for a great many things, not the least of which is our incredible theater scene. No matter the time of year, it seems like the Berkshires’ stage is alive with music, dance, drama, or comedy.
Pittsfield’s annual 10X10 Upstreet Arts Festival is back and with it comes Barrington Stage Company’s 10X10 New Play Festival. This fast-paced event sees ten new plays performed in just over an hour and a half! February 15th through March 4th, 2018.
The 10X10 Upstreet Arts Festival in Pittsfield, MA is an annual showcase of music, film, visual art, spoken word, comedy, dance, theater, and more. The festival sees 66 events at 12 different venues, and all based around the number 10. The diverse roster of local and regional participants includes the Berkshire Museum, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and Hancock Shaker Village.
Barrington Stage Company’s 10X10 New Play Festival features ten 10-minute plays, written by 10 playwrights, and performed by an ensemble of six actors! Thursdays through Sundays, February 16th to March 5th, 2017!
This diverse arts festival, held in downtown Pittsfield from February 16th through the 26th, sees all manner of activities and attractions – and all based in some way around the number ten. Ten minutes of fireworks, for example, or 10 Photographs by 10 artists.
American Son, which saw it’s world premiere earlier this year on the Barrington Stage returns for eleven more shows this fall. Wednesdays through Sundays, September 14th through the 25th, 2016!
American Son is a compelling racial drama, starring Tamara Tunie and Michael Hayden. Written by Christopher Demos-Browne, and directed by Julianne Boyd, the play’s world premiere earlier this summer received rave reviews. The play has since received the prestigious Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play of 2016.
The end of the year is always an exciting time, but especially here in the Berkshires with the Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” on stage and the recent release of the Tanglewood 2016 season schedule.

Most of us have seen the classic Frank Capra Christmas film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, and even those of us who haven’t know the basic storyline – a suicidal George Bailey discovers the value of his life, guided by a would-be angel named Clarence who is on a quest to earn his wings – so what’s exciting about revisiting that same, old story on stage?
Well, first of all, it’s being presented by the renowned Berkshire theater group Shakespeare & Company, who routinely present some of the best theater productions in the area. Secondly, this is not “It’s A Wonderful Life” but, rather, “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.”
