February 22, 2019 by Corey A. Edwards

Ioka Valley Farm for Massachusetts Maple Month 2019It’s almost March and that means Massachusetts Maple Month! Come celebrate this sweet season with a visit to a local sugar house, like Ioka Valley Farm!

The Maple sugaring season in Massachusetts is a short one, typically running from mid-February to mid-March. This is the time when temperatures rise enough for the sugar maple sap to flow.

Sugarmakers collect the sap with taps and buckets, then boil it down in their sugarhouses to make pure and delicious Massachusetts maple. The sweet and seductive scent of maple from their operations is a wonderful part of the season. Come experience it during Massachusetts Maple Month!

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

December 6, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” is a clever reworking of a classic favorite, presented on stage by the Berkshires own Shakespeare & Company.

Most of us have seen the classic Frank Capra Christmas film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, and even those of us who haven’t know the basic storyline – a suicidal George Bailey discovers the value of his life, guided by a would-be angel named Clarence who is on a quest to earn his wings – so what’s exciting about revisiting that same, old story on stage?

Well, first of all, it’s being presented by the renowned Berkshire theater group Shakespeare & Company, who routinely present some of the best theater productions in the area. Secondly, this is not “It’s A Wonderful Life” but, rather, “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.”

What’s the difference?

Berkshires bed and breakfast celebrates Jacob’s Pillow

May 13, 2009 by Applegate Inn

One of the things we enjoy most about our Stockbridge MA hotel is its proximity to great art. From Tanglewood to Jacob’s Pillow to theater festivals, there is almost always something exciting happening nearby. We at the Inn take advantage of these outstanding opportunities as much as we can, and we encourage our visitors to do so, too. Let us know how we can help facilitate your enjoyment of the arts in the area adjacent to our Berkshires bed and breakfast.

In 1930, a dancing couple purchased Jacob’s Pillow Farm, which was first homesteaded in 1790. Since then, dance has been part of the 163-acres that sit atop a hill near an old stage-coach road between Albany, NY and Boston, MA. What ultimately became known as the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival has had many versions throughout the years, but has always remained true to its desire “to present and preserve a wide-ranging variety of dance forms” and to maintain “a diversity unparalleled among American dance festivals” (Jacob’s Pillow Website).

Today, Jacob’s Pillow is an international dance organization that is often considered to be the “mecca” of dance. Dancers from more than fifty dance companies from around the globe make pilgrimages here to participate in workshops, perform, and celebrate dance. Visitors may observe dancers as they train at The School at Jacob’s Pillow, or in performances at one of three venues. Visitors have access to thousands of videos and photographs in the Archives. In addition, more than 200 free performances, classes, tours and events make up the Community Dance Programs that are designed to keep the medium of dance alive and share it with both experienced and novice dancers.

The festivals at Jacob’s Pillow start June 24th. Plan to stay at the Applegate Inn and delight in the wonders of Jacob’s Pillow.

No matter what your preferences, it is our goal to ensure that you leave our Stockbridge MA hotel well fed. And of course, we hope you like the blueberry buckle and Baked Stuffed French Toast at the Applegate bed and breakfast.

The concierge at our Berkshires bed and breakfast can also direct you to the best place to stock your picnic basket when you are heading to Tanglewood. Opening night is two months away, and it is not too early to reserve your tickets for Diana Krall on the 4th of July, or plan your visit to our Berkshire b&b.
