Get out into the great outdoors of the Berkshires with a visit to October Mountain State Forest. Hiking, biking, boating, picnicking, gorgeous scenery, and more. October Mountain has it all!
October Mountain State Forest is Massachusetts largest state forest. Its 16,500 acres encompass a portion of the Hoosac Range on the western edge of the central Berkshires. The forest includes an uplands area with several reservoirs.
The “October Mountain” name comes from the forest’s highest point; a ridge rising majestically up out of the Housatonic River Valley. Herman Melville treasured the view of the ridge from his home in Pittsfield, particularly in autumn. The name “October Mountain” is attributed to him.
Best of all, October Mountain is right here in Lee. Just a ten-minute drive from your room at our Berkshires bed and breakfast, Applegate Inn.

Berkshire Mountain Biking
April 5, 2010 by Applegate Inn
Spring is a fun time to mountain bike in the Berkshires. The trails aren’t crowded, the weather isn’t too hot, and the woods are shimmering with new growth.
There are well over 100 mountain biking trails in the Central and Southern Berkshires. In fact, there are easily a dozen trails close to our Lenox bed and breakfast.
The Lenox Fire Tower offers a great challenge – the view from the top is worth all the effort it takes to get there, but we can’t say the ride down will be relaxing. October Mountain State Forest has 11 miles of rolling trails, while the trail up Lenox Mountain rewards your hard work with fantastic views.
You’ll be ready to relax with wine and cheese in the living room of our Lenox bed and breakfast, or soak in your generous jetted tub. After an excellent night’s sleep, we’ll provide a delicious, nourishing breakfast to help get you back in the saddle so you can explore more nearby Berkshire mountain bike trails.
